Open Call for Six Artists in Fitzrovia – Studio Residencies 2026

The Cartoon Museum

Fitzrovia Quarter, a creative neighbourhood in the heart of central London, is welcoming six artists to a free studio residency running from June to November 2026 at 53 Great Portland Street. If you need a space to work in London, where all the creations are celebrated, this one’s for you.

Who can join this program?

The residency is open to artists aged 18 or over as of 1 June 2026, working in any media that suits the studio environment. That includes painting, drawing, illustration, photography, textile, sculpture, mixed media, and more. As long as you are based in Greater London or a commutable distance away, you are welcome to apply.

There’s no expectation of a specific final output. We want you to use this time to genuinely develop your work, at your own pace. However, the selection panel will be assessing applications across three areas:

– Response to theme and quality of work (40%): Originality, emotional power, and boldness of approach

– Collaborative practice and engagement with place (30%): A track record of working with other artists or community partners, and an openness to what Fitzrovia has to offer

– Studio-based practice (30%): A commitment to showing up and being part of the resident cohort

Remember that our application will be assessed on your work and ideas not the quality of your writing.

Creative placemaking shaped by "What Holds Us Together"

Date: June to November 2026
Location: 53 Great Portland Street, Fitzrovia Quarter

This residency invites artists to explore the idea of What Holds Us Together, looking at connection, identity, and belonging through the lens of Fitzrovia’s diverse communities and layered histories.

By bringing this theme into a live studio setting, the residency becomes part of Fitzrovia Quarter’s placemaking, transforming space into something active, meaningful, and community-focused. Through everyday studio practice and moments of public engagement, the artists’ work helps shape Fitzrovia Quarter as a creative area and unforgettable place to visit.

What you’ll get from the program?

If you’re one of the six artists selected, you’ve got some brilliant perks to look forward to:

– Your own studio, rent-free: You’ll be given your own individual workspace (about 11 square metres) at 53 Great Portland Street from June until November 2026, and it won’t cost you a penny.

– A chance to show off your work: In late October, there’ll be a showcase exhibition in Fitzrovia just for the residency artists. It’s a great way to share what you’ve been up to with the local community and the public.

– Exhibition costs covered: Fitzrovia Quarter will cover all the production and installation costs for the exhibition (within reason, of course).

– Keep 100% of your sales: If you sell a piece during the exhibition, you keep the lot! The organisers don’t take any commission fees at all.

– Join a corporate collection: One of your pieces will be chosen to join The Langham Estate’s very first corporate art collection, marking your time with the programme.
